The Billy Goat Caller

Here it is, guys. The same movie, higher quality. 25 minutes of zany hilarity. The first DFear Studios short film.

There’s so much to talk about with this one, I don’t know where to start. Well, we started filming this sucker around January or something. It didn’t get finished until July. That wasn’t because it took that long to make, it’s cause scheduling was a pain! It was such a relief when it was finally done.

Certain scenes of this movie were actually written around the score by John Debney. I would listen to it on the bus on my way to school each morning, and plan out the scenes around the big cues. The YEAH scene? Totally made to fit with the music I picked. The final showdown at the end? Same deal. Music adds a whole lot to a film, and when you have a constant theme for the whole movie, it brings up emotions you wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

This one was something that changed a lot on set. Not actual plot points, but the dialogue shifted like crazy when we finally started filming! A lot of the school stuff changed, mainly Tim’s line about the Golden Goose. Check out the bloopers to see another version.

Fun little tidbit, ya know the “So this is because of Julia, Travis?” “Do that again.” “So this is because of Julia, Travis?” part? Well, that was an editing mistake I made, but we all cracked up at it when I played the scene, so it stayed.

In terms of the fight, that was a lot of fun to shoot and edit. I don’t get to do much action stuff, so filming a hectic (yet a little cartoony) fight choreographed scene was kinda cool for us! I remember practicing it in my basement all by myself, then teaching it to Seth in school the next day. Fun times.

I really can’t wait to visit this whole universe again with the sequel. We’re all gonna have a lot of fun. I miss the blistering hot days in the forest, mosquitoes and poison ivy irritating my skin...it was just such an experience. As silly as this movie is, it’s like, a huge benchmark in all of our lives.
